- FIELD GUIDE TO THE FIELDED TEXT VERSION (MS-DOS)
-
- NAFTA for DOS is designed for targeted word searching as well as
- browsing. The "Global By Word" index will probably be the most
- useful, since it ensures a complete search through both Volumes I
- and II for any given word or combination of words. Numbers are
- also indexed, making it easy to find references to particular
- goods by their tariff item number under the Harmonized System.
-
- For a simple word search, for example, to find all references to
- "automobile," you would select the "Global By Word" index, type
- in "automobile," and press F2 to bring up the results of your
- one-word search. Or maybe you noticed, in glancing at the
- alphabetical word wheel, that there are also 3 references to
- "automobiles," 12 to "auto," and 70 to "automotive"? If you want
- to execute a search on all four words, just position the cursor
- over each one and press Enter. You can press F4 to check your
- search criteria, then F9 to execute this slightly more complex
- search. If you want to see each record separately, use F8 to
- move forward through the search results. Or, by pushing Alt+F9,
- you can bring up all of the citations in a continuous, scrollable
- text.
-
-
- You can also narrow your search by selecting any of the 38
- specific indices. The indices are especially useful if you are
- looking for a particular section of the text (e.g. a specific
- Annex, Schedule, or Appendix) or for a particular category of
- information (e.g. What Sectors are dealt with in Annexes I-VII?).
- For example, the fastest way to find Annex 300-B would be to
- select the "Annex" index from the Main Menu, then type in
- "300-B."
-
- Context-sensitive help is available at any time by pressing
- Alt+F1 or the right mouse button. Or, if the cursor is over a
- word or the first character of a phrase when this function is
- executed, a text window will come up showing how many occurrences
- of that word or phrase appear in the entire database.
-
- Original Page Notation:
-
- Original page numbers (as they appear in the GPO document) are
- included with the last full record that occurs on a page. The
- page number will be enclosed in brackets and be followed by a
- line of dashes, indicating a page break. For example, paragraph 7
- of Annex 312.2, which is the last record on page 3-61, will read:
-
- "For the purposes of this Annex:
- wine includes wine and wine-containing beverages."
-
- [3-61]
- ------------------------------
-
-
- An original page number notation may appear in the middle of a
- record, indicating that this is where the page breaks in the
- original document. In cases where a list spans more than one
- page, the original page number will be included with the record
- for the last item on that page:
-
- Tariff Item: 0408.11.01
- Item Description: Dried yolks
-
- [7-26]
- ------------------------------
-
-
- It is always recommended to refer to the beginning of any
- particular section you are in to check for any notes or comments
- that might pertain to that entire section, since the full text of
- the note will not appear with each record. In Annex 401, there
- are Notes regarding the following Harmonized System Chapters: 6-
- 14, 20, 50, 61, 62, 63, 84, 85, 90. Other sections with such
- notes include: Annexes 301.3 (paragraphs 4a and 4c), 403.1,
- 703.3, 1001.1a-1, 1001.1b-2, and 1001.2a and Appendices 1.1,
- 703.2.B.7, and 1001.1b-2-B.
-
- A more complete introduction to the fielded data setting,
- including a Quick Guide to command keys, is included in your
- NAFTA booklet. On-line help is also available by pressing F10
- and selecting from the highlighted features in the Pull-Down
- Menus by pushing Alt+F1.
